Along with the update, Type R received larger cupholders, revised switches for electronic parking brakes, and leaner steering controls. The Civic super color palette was also expanded to include Sonic Gray Pearl.

Type R is a rare type of car with exceptional track capabilities and friendly road behavior. It sticks on the road like a Velcro bionic, with a telepathic steering wheel that will embarrass Miss Cleo and the chassis that seems to be set by a Formula 1 engineer. Although the suspension is stiffer than the sporty Civic, the R-rated version is still very comfortable - especially compared to the Focus RS who drive a car. It's just a little impolite on a rough road or above a hard bump, where 20-inch wheels and low profile tires produce a hard impact. Honda's big grip is exhibited in our skidpad, where it draws 1.02 g - an impressive achievement for every car, especially with the front wheel drive. The Type R sets a higher standard with an amazing emergency braking distance (70 mph to zero) of 142 feet, which is the same as the $ 200,000 Acura NSX supercar that we tested.
Fuel Economy and Real World MPG
The Honda Civic Type R boasts EPA's above average fuel economy rating and works equally well in the real world. The R type and its competitors all match or exceed their EPA highway estimates in our fuel saving cycle. Honda's hot hatchback rings at 29 mpg, beating its ranking with 1 mpg - although it's still lagging behind 31 mpg Golf R.
Interior, Infotainment and Cargo
Pros: The front seats are very comfortable, traceable and practical, the stereo has a volume button - finally!
Disadvantages: Bright red interiors will offend some, no cellular hotspots.
The Type R interior is rated R for scenes that involve haphazard red accents and uncomfortable racing seats. Although the arrangement is not smooth, the interior relies on the Type R trademark and the material is eager to accentuate adequate passenger space. The 7.0-inch digital measuring cluster has a red theme - clear - and a different appearance for each drive mode.
The addition of volume buttons and physical buttons has reduced some of our frustration with the touch screen infotainment system interface. Otherwise, the infotainment system has standard features such as integrated navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Rockin 'stereo. The Honda Civic Type R may be the same track star and daily driver, but also a very practical travel companion. In our tests, it accommodated significantly more ping-pong balls than its competitors and tied the WRX STI to the greatest capacity of carry-on-luggage.
